Rupshu Valley Trek-Ladakh, Northern India . Himalayan summer trekking in northern India 's Ladakh district, known as "Little Tibet".
The Rupshu region in the south-east of Ladakh is the western fringe of the Chang Tang, a huge plateau that spreads hundreds of kilometers across Tibet . It is a starkly beautiful region of high altitude arid plains, gentle mountain ranges and salt water lakes such as Tso ( Lake ) Kar and Tso Moriri. As on the Chang Tang, its inhabitants are largely nomads.
This is one of Ladakhs protected areas which was opened to tourists only from 1994. It is one of Ladakh's most fragile environments where uncontrolled tourism is causing serious problems. The areas around Tso Kar and Tso Moriri are the nesting grounds for some of the endangered species of birds like the Bar Headed Geese, Pochard and the critically endangered Black Necked Crane to name a few. Some of the tamest Tibetan wild asses can be seen in the Rupshu valley.
Experience of a traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture undisturbed by the Cultural Revolution Ancient, yet active monasteries where monks go about their daily lives, and beautiful artwork enhances rustic interiors Trekking through one of the most remote areas of the Greater Himalaya in a landscape of plunging canyons and verdant river bottoms.

My husband and I went on a trek in Nepal this past August, and we had a fabulous time. It was truly the most unique, beautiful outdoor travel experience that either of us have ever had. For anyone considering trekking in the Himalayas, we highly recommend Raj Tamang as a guide. His company, Responsible Adventures (www.responsibleadventures.com) and (www.notjusttreks.com), is professional and customer-service oriented.
We were amazed at the ways that Raj and his employees went above and beyond to make this experience memorable for us. Raj is a 'walking encyclopedia' of information about the culture and history of Nepal, and his confident, welcoming nature put us at ease. He was experienced at facilitating positive, genuine interaction between Himalayan villagers and Western trekkers such as ourselves, and that made all the difference in our 10 days touring the Manang valley. His company offers a service that is truly a cut above the rest.
We can't wait for another opportunity to trek with Raj! Feel free to check out our story and pics at www.joshandelise2008.blogspot.com
